An Australian renter has asked for help after being left confused by a mystery metal object in her new bathroom. 

The baffled woman asked the 381,500 members of the Cleaning and Organising Inspiration Australia Facebook group what the strange item was and what she should do with it. 

Hundreds offered their advice as it was revealed the metal object attached to the wall is used to hold either an old school soap dish or a round toothbrush cup.

'I have this metal thing on the wall of the bathroom in my rental. Not sure entirely what it's supposed to be used for but it's a bit of an eyesore in my otherwise nice bathroom,' the renter wrote. 

'I was wondering if anyone might have some ideas on how I could disguise it, decorate it to make it look nice or suggest a practical use?' she asked.

Many in the comments offered their guesses with a few thinking its purpose it is hold hair dryers and straighteners. 

'Looks like it holds a hair straightener or hair dryer to me,' one member thought.

'Somewhere to put your wine while you wash your hands after peeing,' a second laughed while another joked: 'Wine bottle holder?'. 

However, lots of people came through with the right answer and said they have one in their own bathrooms. 

'I used to have these in an old rental. It had a glass type dish on top, for holding soap!' someone wrote. 

'Usually there's a cup that fits in the ring , these are in many hotels (usually put my toothbrush and toothpaste in them so the sink doesn't look messy),' a mum said. 

Others had suggestions for what to do with the ring including using it to hold plants, diffusers and toiletries. 

'Get a cup that'll fit into it with it falling through and put toothbrushes, toothpaste into it or put razors in it or earbuds, cotton wools/pads lots of options,' one woman offered.

'Put a luscious plant in or in front of it and hide the ugly bits,' said a second and another agreed: 'Small little pot with succulent that will overhang like a string of pearls'. 

'I have one in my bathroom and it hold a lovely bottle which dispenses hand wash,' a third replied. 

'Put double sided tape and a pretty coaster then put a small diffuser,' commented a fourth.
